From Waste to Wonder: A Young Entrepreneur’s Guide to Circularity in the UAE

From Waste to Wonder: A Young Entrepreneur’s Guide to Circularity in the UAE

Thought Leadership

By Bochra Bargaoui, founder of Bochra.Neptune

My entrepreneurial journey began at 20, fuelled by a passion for sustainability and a desire to transform waste into something valuable. My studies at the University of Europe for Applied Sciences in Dubai were instrumental in shaping my approach. The university’s emphasis on design thinking and its strong network within the entrepreneurial ecosystem provided me with the tools and connections I needed to launch my own venture. Through workshops, mentorship programmes, and networking events, I gained invaluable insights and met like-minded individuals who shared my passion for sustainability.

This supportive environment fostered my growth as an innovator and led me to launch Bochra.Neptune, a startup that embodies the principles of the circular economy by upcycling construction waste into beautiful mosaic wall art and engaging educational toys.

Turning Trash into Treasure: The Power of Upcycling

Globally, the construction industry generates an estimated 1.3 billion tonnes of waste annually and contributes significantly to global waste generation. Research estimates that construction and demolition waste (C&DW) accounts for approximately 30% of the total waste produced worldwide – 38.4% in the European Union (EU), with more than 855 million tonnes – underscoring the urgent need for improved waste management and sustainable practices.

In the UAE, C&DW accounts for a significant share of total waste generation – 71% in Abu Dhabi where 7,000 tonnes are produced daily while Dubai generates approximately 5,000 tonnes of C&DW every day. According to a study by Boston Consulting Group, GCC countries collectively generate 105 to 130 million tonnes of waste annually – primarily from construction, municipal, and agricultural sources. To address this issue, governments in the UAE, Saudi Arabia, and Qatar have issued legislation requiring construction firms to use 20% to 40% recycled aggregates in infrastructure projects.

Bochra.Neptune has taken a unique approach to addressing this challenge. Recognising the vast amounts of construction waste, the idea focused on repurposing materials that can be transformed into beautiful artwork. By reclaiming marble and granite remnants from construction sites – materials otherwise destined for landfills – Bochra.Neptune gives them a second life, turning waste into sustainable and artistic creations.

Our artwork is built around two inspiring concepts: mosaic wall art and educational toys. Our mosaic wall art adds a unique touch to homes and businesses, transforming reclaimed materials into stunning visual pieces. Meanwhile, our educational toys inspire creativity and environmental awareness in children, introducing them to sustainability and recycling from an early age. This approach not only reduces landfill burden and conserves natural resources but also minimises CO2 emissions associated with waste disposal and the production of new materials.

Navigating the UAE’s Sustainability Landscape

The UAE has proven to be a fertile ground for sustainable entrepreneurship. As of the second quarter of 2024, the UAE registered over 5,600 startups, positioning itself as the leading incubator among Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) countries. The government’s commitment to sustainability, coupled with initiatives like the UAE Green Agenda 2030, has created a supportive ecosystem for businesses like mine to thrive. Abu Dhabi, in particular, has emerged as a hub for innovation, with programmes like the Catalyst Accelerator providing access to funding, mentorship, and networking opportunities.

Being selected for the Catalyst Accelerator programme and making it to the top 10 out of 168 applicants, was a significant milestone for Bochra.Neptune. The programme, along with the invaluable mentorship, support, and guidance we received, has been instrumental in refining our business strategy, strengthening our financial model, and preparing us for scaling our operations.

Key Takeaways for Aspiring Eco-preneurs

Here are my key takeaways for those exploring sustainable business opportunities and integrating sustainable concepts:

  • Embrace the Circular Economy: Look for opportunities to turn waste into valuable products or services. This approach not only benefits the environment but can also unlock new revenue streams.

  • Leverage the UAE’s Support System: Take advantage of the government initiatives, funding opportunities, and incubator programmes available in the UAE to support sustainable businesses.

  • Build a Strong Network: Connect with like-minded entrepreneurs, mentors, and investors who can provide guidance and support.

  • Educate Your Consumers: Clearly communicate the value and benefits of your sustainable products or services to raise awareness and drive demand.

Looking Ahead: A Future of Innovation and Impact

The future of sustainable entrepreneurship in the UAE will be shaped by innovations in materials, technology, and consumer behaviour. Bochra.Neptune is committed to staying at the forefront of these trends, exploring new ways to create even more sustainable and innovative products.

As a young female entrepreneur, I am proud to be part of a growing movement of women who are leading the charge in sustainability. My advice to other aspiring entrepreneurs, especially women, is to believe in themselves, persevere through challenges, and never stop innovating.

By transforming waste into wonder, we can inspire others to rethink their consumption habits and contribute to a more sustainable future for all.
